Every Situation Has Two Handles
Every situation presents us with two handles. One leads to frustration and negativity, while the other offers understanding and growth. The choice of which handle to grasp is ours.
This idea comes from Stoicism and was originally shared by Epictetus. I read about it in a Ryan Holiday article.
I find this metaphor helpful, especially in high-pressure work environments. When demands feel overwhelming and everything feels outside our control, we can still reclaim our agency by choosing how we respond.
Even in difficult situations, there’s often an opportunity for growth or learning. This isn’t about ignoring challenges or promoting toxic positivity. It’s about responding in a way that aligns with our values, supports wellbeing, and encourages sustainable productivity.
Next time you face a difficult situation, if you can, take a moment to consciously choose which handle to grab.
