My Word of the Year 2026
Every year, I choose a word to help steer my decisions and actions, and to set the tone for the months that follow. For 2026, that word is strength.
I am a few years away from turning 50 (which is, frankly, remarkable because in my head I am still in my early thirties). Even so, I recognise that my needs and priorities are changing.
Choosing strength means future-proofing my body and mind, and other practical things like my finances, through mindful, sustainable choices.
Physical strength is a priority. I am currently training for a half-marathon, not to achieve a specific time—I’m not what you’d call a natural runner—but to support my mental health and physical wellbeing. Training for a full marathon no longer feels sensible (I've done two); it would likely lead to injury and leave little room for the other things I love. After the race, I will shift my focus toward dedicated strength training to ensure my body remains capable as I age.
Mental strength is equally important and, for me, this is found in the discipline of rest. It takes strength to uphold boundaries and say no when a request threatens my capacity to do the things I want to. Building muscle requires rest and recovery; maintaining a thriving career, business, and personal life requires the same.
Finally, I am applying the lens of strength to my personal finances. Resilience in this area means being intentional with my spending. I want the strength to resist minor, impulsive purchases so I can fund what truly matters.
When we think of strength, we often think of physical exertion, force, or the ability to push through exhaustion. In reality, physical and mental strength both rely on recovery. You cannot build one without the other. This year, my focus is on that balance.
