The MoSCoW Method for Prioritising Tasks

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, you’re probably juggling too many priorities at once. And when everything is urgent, nothing is.

A clear, flexible prioritisation method can help.

The MoSCoW (or MSCW) method, short for Must, Should, Could, Won’t, is a simple way to sort through competing demands:

  • Musts are essential, time-sensitive, and non-negotiable tasks.

  • Shoulds are important, but can wait.

  • Coulds are optional and can be done if time permits.

  • Won’ts are unnecessary or can be eliminated.

I would suggest one small adjustment to this model: try starting with the Won’ts. Deciding what doesn’t belong on your list creates space. It protects your time and energy before you’ve even begun, and that makes everything else feel more manageable.

Have you tried MoSCoW, or do you use a different approach to prioritisation? I’d love to hear what works for you.
