The Forgotten Pillar of Health
We are well aware of the traditional pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, and nature. Today’s doodle focuses on a fifth pillar that is often overlooked—the arts.
I recently attended a talk by Daisy Fancourt at the Guernsey Literary Festival. As a Professor of Psychobiology and Epidemiology at University College London, her perspective is rooted in scientific research. Her book, Art Cure, details how engaging with the arts can significantly improve our physical and mental health.
Fancourt defines the arts broadly. It is not limited to visiting galleries or playing an instrument; it includes gardening, knitting, or even doodling. The science shows that these activities are as fundamental to our health as a balanced diet or a regular sleep schedule.
The science is clear: integrating creative practice into your daily life is a practical, not a luxury.
If you are not sure where to start, then I recommend getting a copy of Art Cure and reading for just 10 minutes a day. Grow your creative practice from there.
