We Need Cognitive Friction
When was the last time you sat with a problem long enough for it to feel uncomfortable?
In physical exercise, micro-tears in our muscles lead to increased strength. Thinking operates in a similar way. Cognitive frictionâthe discomfort of the struggle between a problem and its solutionâis where learning happens. This process builds our capacity for deep thought.
I have been reflecting on how tempting it is to outsource our thinking to AI. When we do this, we remove the friction required for professional growth. Efficiency is useful for maintenance tasks, but outsourcing the difficult parts of thinking erodes our cognitive stamina.
My ability to think critically is incredibly important to me, so I know I need to protect it. But how?
I think it comes down to being intentional with tools. For example, I try to use AI to handle administrative tasks or to spot gaps in my arguments, but I am careful not to let it generate the final answer. I want to ensure I am still doing the heavy lifting myself.
